The meanings of Alstroemeria

Commonly called Peruvian Lily or Lily of the Incas or Parrot Lily, Alstroemeria is known as a flower of friendship. Besides, alstroemeria is a symbolic of wealth, prosperity and fortune.

About Alstroemeria flower and plant

Alstroemeria is a monocot plant, whose flower is slightly zygomorphic with 3 sepals and 3 striped petals. These sepals and petals on this flower is similar in color and texture. Alstroemeria has 6 stamens, an undivided style and the inferior ovary with 3 carpels. Its leaves grow upside down, with the leaf twisting as it grows out from the stem, so that the bottom is facing upwards – much like the twists, turns and growth of our friendships.

Growing Alstroemerias

  • Plant Alstroemeria in full sun, in well-drained soil.
  • Add a light application of organic fertilizer to the planting hole.
  • Place the plants no deeper than they were growing in the containers.
  • Set the plants 1 foot apart.
  • Mulch around but not on top of the plants, with 3 inches of organic compost.
  • Water well until soil is completely moist.

Alstroemeria Plant Care

  • Cut off old flower stems with bypass pruners.
  • Mulch around but not on top of the plants in early spring, with 3 inches of organic compost.
  • Water well weekly until soil is completely moist especially summers, when there is no rain.
